This US Department of Labor study focuses on the population of New Americans—immigrants legally allowed to work and live in the United States who have obtained their professional credentials abroad. The study explores the prevalence of the New American population participating in the US workforce from 2017 to 2022, finding that despite their credentials they are more likely to be unemployed or accept jobs that do not require a college degree compared with their US-born or US-educated peers. Policymakers, educators, employers, and community organizers can use this evidence to unlock the unrealized potential of these workers, enhancing US economic innovation and strengthening the US labor market.
