The complex legacy of the Unemployment Insurance (UI) program in the United States includes nearly a century of labor market practices that have unfairly limited access to UI for some groups of workers, among them women and Black men. Ellora Derenoncourt, assistant professor of economics at Princeton University, discusses her research on how this lack of access has affected these communities, and how UI policy changes over time have improved access while also making future policy action more difficult.
